Eighteenth Annual International Anodizing Conference & Exposition
October 6 – 8, 2009 • Sheraton Fort Worth • Fort Worth, Texas
AAC Awards
During the Eighteen Annual International Anodizing Conference and Exposition, two new awards were presented to two outstanding volunteers. This was the first time either of these awards have been bestowed on an AAC volunteer.
Jude M. Runge, PhD was presented with the Council's Outstanding Achievement Award.
Dr. Runge was recognized for "consistently [delivering] on the promise of excellence," stated AAC Chairman Terry Snell, Manager—Environmental for Bonnell Aluminum in Newnan, Georgia. "She consistently brings fresh, innovative work that reflects insight and thoroughness, thus raising the bar and elevating the standard by which our conference content is judged…such exemplary contributions deserve special recognition," Snell explained.

Advancements
in Anodizing:
Improved Finish Properties through Electrolyte Modification
Jude M. Runge, Ph.D., CompCote International, Inc., Elmhurst, Illinois, USA
A new anodic oxidation process for aluminum and aluminum alloys was theorized, developed and patented which enables the formation of composite polymer-aluminum oxide finishes. Important to the process is the modification of the electrolyte to include electroactive monomer. The additive is actually made conductive through its introduction to the electrolyte. Because the anodization process and polymerization reactions are both oxidative, the reactions occur simultaneously during anodizing of the aluminum substrate, forming uniform, continuous finishes. Scientific characterization of the finishes determined the polymer is integrated and bound to the anodic oxide structure. Engineering characterization determined the composite finishes are more corrosion and wear resistant as well as more colorfast. In addition, the finish was found to offer actual bonding sites for subsequent polymer layers, giving better adhesion. Implementation, maintenance and waste treatment of the process, after several years in full scale production have shown the process is easy to handle, efficient and less expensive to operate than conventional hard anodizing processes.

Aluminium 2000, 6th World Congress
March 13 – 17, 2007
Florence, Italy
The Congress attracted 350 participants from 36 countries and
offered a wide spectrum of papers that gave insights into the Aluminum
market, production technologies, surface treatment, equipment and new
developments in all fields. The congress
can be considered to be one of the most comprehensive regarding all aspects
of the Aluminium Industry and its connected industries.
Dr. Judy M. Runge, President of CompCote International, presented
a paper at the conference about new developments in anodizing, which
drew strong interest.
The next Aluminium 2000 conference will be held 2011 in Milan, Italy.

Understanding the Anodic Oxide Finish –
The First Commercially Available Nanoscale Coating
Abstract: Just go to Google – Nanomaterials, nanotechnology and nano-processing are the marketing buzzwords for the 21st century. Did you know that conventional anodizing processes yield a nanoscale finish? Armed with this knowledge we can approach our old industry with new enthusiasm. The long standing successful track record for the ease, reliability and reproducibility of the anodic finish should enable insights into new applications. Comprehensive comparative studies of various anodic oxide microstructures and their corresponding engineering properties enabled new scientific insight for the mechanism of anodic oxide formation on aluminum and aluminum alloys. The results of these studies indicate the importance of understanding the anodizing process and the synergy between process, microstructure and engineering properties to bring innovation and improvement to our mature industry.
